The Abyssinian horse is also known as the Gala, Oromo Horse, or
Ethiopian Horse. It is one of the oldest horse breeds on record.
ORIGINS
The Abyssinian horse originated in the dry regions of Ethiopia and
spread along the coast of the Red Sea. It was exported to England
as early as 1861, where it became a popular breed. It can also be
found Sudan and the United States.
PHYSICAL FEATURES / PHYSIQUE
The Abyssinian horse is considered a light horse breed. It stands on
average 13.3 hands. Common colors ae brown, chesnut, grey, and white.
However, because this horse has been diluted with various other breeds,
it comes in numerous colors. Green eyes are common. The mane and tail
of this horse is sparce, and Its coat grows in swirls pointing in numerous
directions. This makes it rather difficult to groom and keep clean. The
Abyssinian horse is also famous for its moustache or tuft of hair around
its nose.
TEMPERAMENT
Traits of Abyssinian horses are strength, endurance, agility, and willingness.
USES / ASSETS
Abyssinian horses are hot weather, working animals. They are able to work
in hot and mountainous areas. Used for farming, riding, packing, and many
other kinds of work.
STATUS
All the registered Abstangs are the result of Mustang/Arabian crosses.
There are no Abstang to Abstang matings as yet, and there seems to be
little interest in creating any.
