Horse racing has become a very economical sport. It is almost always
between horses of a specific breed. There are many different types
of horse racing including Barrel Racing, Endurance Racing, Flat
Racing, Harness Racing and Jump Racing or Steeplechasing. Barrel
Racing is when horses run a clover leaf pattern around 3 barrels.
Endurance Racing is when horses travel across country over extreme
distances, usually ranging from 25 to 100 miles (40 to 161 km). Flat
Racing is when horses run directly between two points on a straight or
oval track. Harness racing is when horses trot or pace while pulling a
driver in a sulky. Jump Racing is when horses race over obstacles.
Thoroughbreds are the most commonly used breed for racing. They are
known for their strength, speed and athleticism. Thoroughbred horse
racing is either on the flat or over jumps. Arabian Horses are best
for endurance riding because of their strength and stamina. American
Quarter Horses are most often raced for a quarter mile which is how
their name derived. They are also used for barrel racing. They have
very solid legs and are excellent at making quick starts and sharp
turns. Standardbred Horses are muscular, having powerful shoulders
and hindquarters. Because of this, they are often used in harness
racing. Many other breeds are used in racing. Some of them are listed below.
